Our goal

The purpose of the Nordic Independent Media Foundation is to support independent journalism in the Nordic countries, but also in other places where independent journalism is facing major challenges.

This can be done through grants and other forms to support individual journalists and media initiatives on an annual or project basis.

The background

In the Western world, and the Nordic countries in particular, the media climate has been deteriorating over a long period of time. The situation is now such that a small number of media conglomerates control virtually the entire landscape. These have strong ties to, or are in fact owned by, large investment banks and other corporate interests such as the the pharmaceutical industry, big tech giants and the military-industrial complex.

This has had a severely negative impact not only on citizens’ access to free and vital information, but also on national democratic processes which has been eroded to an alarming degree.

The existence and development of fully independent media is absolutely crucial to reverse these trends.

Many independent initiatives face various obstacles, both financial and otherwise. For example, they are often subject to so-called shadow banning on social media, which for many years has limited their reach on social media and search engines.

Much of independent journalism and reporting is of high quality and greatly demanded by the public. However, even if they meet all requirements for receiving public press subsidies, they are sometimes wrongly, even unlawfully, denied.

Google and other special interests work methodically to prevent truly free voices from growing by frequently cutting off sources of income, such as advertising revenue based solely on the content and character of independent journalism.

The future

Despite such obstacles, some initiatives have still continued to grow, slowly but steadily over time.

Funding remains, however, the single biggest obstacle to the development of their real potential. The Nordic Independent Media Foundation works to promote such development by raising funds in support of free and independent initiatives.

A financial contribution to the Foundation is one of the most important actions ordinary people, organization, companies and institutions can take to ensure that citizens in the future will have access to free and vital information about the development of our society and the world we live in.
